Right Side Coffee Roasters – Roaster Profile
Right Side Coffee Roasters – Roaster Profile
Like other Southern European countries, Spain has been a little behind Northern Europe in its development of specialty coffee. This is, perhaps, due to an existing, fairly rigid coffee culture built around espresso based drinks and, like Italy, an element of conservatism when it comes to food and drink. This is changing fast, though, and Right Side, with its world class coffees, is leading the charge.
I was first introduced to Right Side by my Spanish friend, John, who is easily the most highly caffeinated and enthusiastic lover of coffee I have ever encountered (as an example, when he stood in for me in my coffee shop once, he brought, and dialled in, 10 different coffees!) John was saying great things about this Barcelona based roaster, so I thought I’d try them out. I was blown away by the quality of their coffees – here were exceptional beans, roasted perfectly in a very non-Spanish way.
In terms of sourcing and social responsibility, Right Side are fully focused:
“At Right Side Coffee traceability, as well as social and environmental sustainability are of great concern to us – our goal is to achieve full transparency in how we trade and acquire each and every lot. It’s important to us that every person, being one link in the value chain, receives a fair return for the work they put in. We do not pay prices that are dictated by the stock market but make sure the amount we pay, reflects the quality of the lots that we buy. In some cases, that can amount to 5 or even 10 times the price at world market level.”
Today Right Side coffees are sold primarily in specialty coffee shops throughout Spain, but are a rare sight in Northern Europe. We thought that this needed changing, so have brought their wonderful, and very reasonably priced coffees, to a global audience.
